What is Gait Analysis & Why Should Runners Get it?

If you run for fun or running is your life, you may have heard hardcore runners talk about getting a gait analysis. But what exactly is that? Is it really necessary? How will it help? Let’s take a look and see if we can answer these for you.

Gait analysis is a method for identifying biomechanical abnormalities in the gait cycle. To put it simply, it’s a tool used to assess the way you walk and run. This can be beneficial for many reasons. It can help identify overactive or underactive muscles in your feet and ankles that can result in injuries and inefficiencies in the future, it can help improve your running form, and it can also help you to find the perfect pair of running shoes for your needs.

There are different ways to get a gait analysis, so you can pick what you’re most comfortable with. The first one is the observational one. In this one, a running specialist will examine your foot, evaluate your foot patterns, and fit you into a running shoe. Another way is with a qualitative analysis, where you are physically examined followed by a visual examination of your running pattern. This one can get quite technical involving a treadmill, camera, and a laptop with sensor software to capture all the minute details of your gait as you run. During this analysis, they will record a short video of you running in a neutral shoe that has little or no cushioning in order to point out any abnormalities in your gait. They will analyze the data to find any excessive pronation (rolling the sole outward), supination (rolling sole inward), or any imbalances or dysfunctional shifts between heel strike and toe-off. This allows them to suggest the correct shoe or inserts to wear to help you avoid injury while running. This also serves as a first step in understanding how to strengthen very specific areas in order to balance out any abnormalities you may have; all of which will help you prevent injuries as you run.

So, why should every runner get a gait analysis? Well, everyone’s body is different. Whether it be your weight, your foot or ankle position, or running posture or form, each runner has unique needs. Having the proper footwear, along with knowing how you can improve your running habits can help you not only avoid injury but also help to improve your form and allow you to push yourself to a level you’ve never been able to before.

It’s important to note that when it comes to a gait analysis it’s not just a one and done. Once you’ve worn your new running shoes and it’s time for a new pair, it’s not a bad idea to have your gait reassessed as it can change once you’ve gotten used to a new pair. Here at Bea’s Sports Injury Clinic, we want you to prevent injuries as much as possible so you can continue doing what you love!
